    Eric,

I would say "Social media has created a - potential - new instantaneous viral network" we talk in probabilities. Nice work weaving several concepts together.

Hello Eric, you have put together a laser targeted and brief summary of the Social Media potential. This is great! :-)

Everybody who do marketing online needs to understand that in the 'Brain vs. Budget' game, the brain will always win in the longterm!

Therefor these points you have mentioned in your article are essential to be taken into account for any business to drive interested and potential clients to and expand the visibility and trust of a business.

It is important to be the flame and not the moth! :-)

It is about getting the right message out to the right people. People are key and this article shows just that. Great visuals and advice!

    Well, maybe maybe not.

I think I'm trusted by my readers because I provide good content (but everyone thinks that don't they).

My guess is that a big part of the story is a popularity contest - everyone wants links from the popular bloggers. Which makes them more popular and so on. Transparency and feedback are important - but I think they are important once you have traffic, not as a way of getting lots of traffic.

    Valeria,
I agree, time will tell just how viral and sustainable social media will eventually be.

thanks, it's basically utilizing the same marketing strategy with a new tool.

    Michelle,
Yes, the trick is finding the "right" opportunity and timing to connect.

    Evan,
I think getting traffic is a marketing tactic (part of a brand strategy), it'll come over time if you're consistent with your brand, taking ownership of your channel. And it's not as important if they're of low quality, that's why email marketing have such low conversion rates.

Excellent advice and analysis you have here. I'm looking at social media and networking as form of friendship. I ask myself: would I honestly recommend this to a (close) friend, thinking that she would benefit from it.. If the answer is no, I can't recommend it. On the other hand, if I personally find something interesting, I like to tell about that, so the people on my network can see who I am.

I like the last part about transparency as that and honesty has always been important to me, not just in social marketing but in "real life" too. And that's what it's all about - looking at these social network services like social networks, your family, friends - and so many seem to forget this. Even if the interaction happens mostly online, in a digital form, it's not that different from non-digital socializing, is it?

    Zemalf,
It's not that different, social media in some ways is mimicking how we engage offline face-to-face. There is just a lower barrier to entry to spark interactions enabling more people to socialize but it's a bit harder to build authentic intimacy.

It's perfect timing that you just wrote this post! I set up several social networks back in April in preparation for my blog launch. I added a couple photos and a quick bio and that was about it. I didn't realize the possibilities at the time.

Social media is incredibly powerful, but it must be utilized effectively. My reasons for creating my social networks have changed from just being available to be followed to creating another channel of communication through which I can continue to build trust and relationships with my blog readers.

Excellent post! I tweeted and stumbled it.

Anyway, she keeps pointing me in the right direction (e.g. here) - and I keep climbing up a steep but very interesting learning curve! Best wishes from Hamburg, Will
